Fighting the “Couldn’t-Care-Less” Syndrome: Teaching English Counter-culturally

By Mariano Quinterno

Postmodern times appear to be dominated by social discourses which promote lack of commitment to long-term objectives, instant gratification and effortless success. Language education seems to clash with these ideas since learning a foreign language takes time and is often the result of hard work. In this social context, teachers find it difficult to motivate students with a “couldn’t-care-less” attitude. This presentation aims to discuss how language educators can teach English counter-culturally thus resisting the values of postmodernism, which seek to deskill learners and impoverish the educational system as a whole.

From passion to action, developing emotional intelligence in the classroom

It all begins in our emotional brain… Emotions have everything to do with cognition! So, how can we harness the power of emotions? In this brief workshop we will use the energy of the emotion to our own advantage by sharing activities that engage emotions and lead to learning and cognition.
